Speaker Petitioned To Refer Four MPs To Privileges Committee | Parliament

Published

on

Mr Ras Mubarak, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu, has petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, to refer four MPs to the Privileges Committee for breaking the rules of the house on absenteeism.

Mr Mubarak in his petition cited Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo, MP for Dome-Kwabenya; Mr Henry Quartey, MP for Ayawaso Central; Mr Ebenezer Kojo Kum, MP for Ahanta West and Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, as MPs who had absented themselves from Parliament for more than fifteen sittings without the Speaker’s permission.

According to him, their conduct required immediate action as it breached Constitutional Provisions and Standing Orders of Parliament.

“It has come to my notice through parliament’s Hansard, newspaper and radio report that four Members of Parliament have all absented themselves from Parliament for more than fifteen sittings of a meeting of Parliament without the permission of Mr Speaker in writing.

“Given this reported breach of the constitutional provision, I respectfully petition your high office to direct for their conduct to be referred to the Privileges Committee for consideration and necessary action,” segments of the petition said.

The petition comes following concerns over Madam Safo’s absence from Parliament.

It is reported that Madam Safo’s last appearance in Parliament was in December 2021.

However, the Minority Caucus alleges that “she had been impersonated to enable the majority to secure the right numbers to vote on the contentious Electronic Transaction Levy.”

Mr Mubarak explained that the petition was necessary to regain the public’s confidence in Parliament.

He has therefore indicated the hope that Parliament would unite to support his petition.

“I humbly submit that democracy can only work if Parliament puts the common good ahead of the party and personal interest.

“At a time of seeming collapse of trust in politics and Parliament as an institution, it is my fervent prayer that the House would rise to the occasion and be united on this matter, to uphold our constitution and also win back waned public confidence,” the petition said.

Speaker of Parliament, Mr Bagbin, has dismissed media reports suggesting he permitted Madam Safo to be absent from parliamentary proceedings on health grounds.

“It’s important I diffuse some fake news, which is being circulated that I granted an interview to say that Adwoa Safo received permission from me to absent herself from Parliament on health grounds.

“I want it to be known by all; that I have not granted any such interview anywhere. I have not said anything like that anywhere,” he said on the floor of Parliament.

Your ‘Propaganda Masturbation’ Demystified – Baako Mocks Achimota Forest Rumormongers | Politics

Published

on

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has responded to speculations that the Achimota Forest has been sold.

The rumored sale of the forest reserve sparked agitations on social media with people blasting the government.

The public outcry was premised on an Executive Instrument (E.I) that circulated online reading that the land ceases to be a forest reserve.

“An Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144 gazetted on behalf of President Akufo-Addo by the Lands Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor indicates that effective May 1, 2022, the land on which the Forest is located shall cease to be a forest reserve.”

“The President’s action was in accordance with Section 19 of the Forest Act, 1927 (CAP. 157) which gives him the authority to declare that particular land is no longer required as a forest reserve,” portions of the E.I stated.

Addressing the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show Wednesday morning, Kweku Baako described the speculations as a “propaganda masturbation”.

He noted that the E.I that surfaced on social media was done for mischief purposes explaining that those who leaked it only showed the front page and strategically ignored the inside pages that would make the public know the truth.

He also wondered why the rumormongers didn’t also showcase E.I 154 which proves the forest is not sold.

“With E.I 144, it was very simple. If it’s not for mischief purposes, there is no way you will be alarmed…The worst part is the exclusion of the E.I I54 from the narrative. That too was deliberate because when you peruse the 154, you will find out that [oh, hold on here] Achimota Forest as it is clearly is being preserved and protected”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

Assessing the speculations, he concluded that “those are distortions, misrepresentations” and lauded the Lands and Natural Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor for setting the record straight in a statement where he emphasized that “Government has and will never sell Achimota Forest” and assured the general public that “no development can take place without the express approval of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, taking into consideration the ecological integrity of the Forest”.

“So, this matter is demystified. The propaganda masturbation was curtailed and curtailed quickly”, Kweku Baako accentuated.

Kwabena Agyepong Appeals To NPP To Pay His Wages, SSNIT Contributions (VIDEO] | Politics

Published

on

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has revealed he is yet to receive salary for his service.

According to him, the work of the General Secretary is the only full-time executive position in the party and the person is entitled to monthly salary.

The NPP, he stated also pays the SSNIT contributions of the General Secretary but his case was different.

“There was only GHS89 in the party’s account when I assumed office as the General Secretary. For the first month, I used my money to pay the workers at the party headquarters and our Treasurer, Abankwah Yeboah can bear witness” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme.

Mr. Agyepong said all attempts to get the party to pay the money due him has proven futile.

“I have written several times to Chairman Blay and reminded him his tenure is about to end so he should do something because I don’t want it to get into another administration but he hasn’t responded” he bemoaned.

The former NPP General Secretary said he is ready to forgo the salary but not the SSNIT contributions.

“If they think I’m not due anything, they should pay my SSNIT contributions because all other General Secretaries have benefitted. Sir John until his death was even staying in an official apartment,” he stated.

The reason he is speaking now, Mr. Agyepong said is to let people know the unfair treatment he has been subjected to over the years despite his selfless service to the NPP.

Kwabena Agyepong was reinstated in 2021 following his suspension in 2015 after he petitioned the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

Asabee Dazzles Delegates In Ashanti | Politics

Published

on

Constituency executives in the Ashanti Region have received with excitement the message from Stephen Asamoah Boateng popularly known as ASABEEE.

The former SIGA boss is currently touring constituencies in his birth ground, the Ashanti Region ahead of the upcoming national chairmanship elections of which he is eyeing the seat as Chairman.

With open confessions and commitments from about 20 constituencies he has toured so far in the region, the reception has been positive for ASABEEE.

Starting his latest tour from his home town of Konongo in the Ashanti Akyem enclave on Saturday and Sunday with massive endorsements from the constituency executives, ASABEEE toured the Bekwai enclave on Monday morning meeting constituency executives from the enclave.

Some of the constituency executives were surprised that ASABEEE was touring their area again, this time coming down Constituency-by-Constituency.

Speaking at these constituencies with a five (5) point plan, the former State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) Director General said he was into the race of chairmanship to win and lead with unified front. “Did you contest to end up as opposition party executive”? Asabeee asked. To a loud response of “No”, Asabeee promised that like them he is in to win the Chairmanship Position and re-energise the NPP to go out and beat the NDC emphatically in 2024 General Elections at all cost.

He promised to resource party persons with logistics and in a timely manner to be able to carry out their mandates and also plan effectively for party work. “I will organise sponsors who believe in our government policies and have the goodwill to see us better manage the economy for the prosperity of Ghanaians”, Asabeee said.

Hon. Asabeee also intimated his desire to lead for amendments in the Party’s Constitution for specific duties to be assigned to elected and appointed executives such as Deputy Secretaries as well as other deputies in the main structure of the party so they function efficiently and effectively.

In his 4th point, the energetic ASABEEE said he would commence a discussion with party leadership when he becomes Chairman so that they could implement what he has termed as agenda 60/40.

This agenda, ASABEEE explained would mean a discussion with the President on how to allocate at least some 40% of all appointments to the Party at Constituency and polling station levels. This will go a long way to bridge the gap between government and Party.

Capping his message, Hon Asabeee noted that the 2024 General elections will not be an easy task but was desirous of leading the NPP to the battleground as a “War Time General” who has the capacity to beat the NDC to their “own game”. He intends to build a strong Party that strategise and take anyone our party would present as flag bearer.

Some of the Chairmen who spoke to this reporter during the visit said their constituency executives were committed to Asabeee because they see him as their own and he has the energy and “No nonsense character” to face the NDC.

They also pledged their support to Asabeee, indicating that they would be voting en bloc on July 14 for the former SIGA boss.

Some of the Chairmen publicly endorsed the candidature of Asabeee, noting that the former Information Minister was the only one that was contesting as Chairman who had shown respect, humility and seriousness to them by touring their areas for at least two times.

They were appreciative of the show of respect and promised to reciprocate in kind by storming Accra to vote en bloc for ASABEEE at the National Elections on July 14.
