Ignore Extra $50,000 For Medicals Report, I Have Never Ever Made Direct Cash Requests – Bagbin | Politics

Published

on

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin, has denied allegation that he’s requesting more money to take care of his medical bills in Dubai.

According to the Daily Guide newspaper, Mr. Bagbin has allegedly sent a request for an additional $50,000,having claimed $120,000 already.

The report further intimated that “with the latest request, Mr. Bagbin would have blown $170,000 on this current trip.

“Information gleaned from the corridors of Parliament indicates that this is not the first time the Speaker is making such a request for extra money. According to a source, in July last year, when the Speaker made his first official trip to Dubai for his medical care, he went with a spending money of $150,000, after which he demanded an additional $100,000, but Parliament was able to raise $90,000, bringing the total to $240,000.”

But in a statement, Bagbin clapped back saying he “has not, at any point in time, made direct cash requests from Parliament”

“We would like to state categorically that the Rt. Hon. Speaker has not, at any point in time, made direct cash requests from Parliament. The conditions of service of public employees, including political office holders, cover medical care, both local and foreign. The specific details of each category of public employees is covered by law.

“In the case of Parliamentarians and Speakers, the Presidential Commission on Emoluments details out the main areas of coverage. This covers sitting and former Speakers. The current Speaker has no authority and has not made any attempt to, in anyway amend or alter what has been in existence before he came into office.

‘Bawumia Is A Great Veep, He Has My Total Admiration And Support’ – Chief Of Staff | Politics

Published

on

Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Chief of Staff, has lauded Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia for his dedication and contribution to the vision of President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

She described the ‘economic whizz-kid’ as “a great Vice President” who discharges his work diligently.

“He is the Vice President. He has always been very active,” she said.
The Chief of Staff went on to say that Dr. Bawumia is not a ceremonial Vice President, adding, “he is contributing to realisation of the vision of President Akufo-Addo,” Akosua Frema Osei-Opare told the host of Joy FM’s ‘Personality Profile’, Thursday, May 12, 2022.

The Chief od Staff did not give a streightforward answer when she was asked about her opinion of Vice President taking over from President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as President of Ghana.

To her, if the New Patriotic Party’s delegates recognise Dr. Bawumia’s accomplishments, she believes it is up to them to decide whether he is qualified to take over from President Akufo-Addo.

She noted, “certainly as a Vice President, he has my total admiration and support.”

When asked to stick her neck out, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare declined stating that, “I know what you are trying to do. I don’t want John Boadu to sanction me (amid laughter), because the party says that they haven’t opened nomination so we should not say what we don’t have to say.”

2024 Polls: Mahama Is A Renewed Person, Will Make A Better President – Haruna Iddrisu | Politics

Published

on

Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has said that former President John Dramani Mahama is a renewed person competent to solve some of the challenges confronting the country when he becomes president again.

According to the legislator, Mr. Mahama has had the opportunity of serving as president and thus has the experience and knowledge to better steer the affairs of the country.

In an interview with Accra-based GH One TV, the Tamale South MP indicated that Mr. Mahama will make a better president.

He consequently charged the opposition National Democratic Congress to rally behind the former president as it heads into the next elections.

Haruna Iddrisu made the comments while evading commentary on rumours of his presidential ambitions.

“I have heard that and I have many commentaries and as I have indicated strongly, we need a front and we unite around President John Dramani Mahama as he then was to see how he recaptures power for the good of the Ghanaian people and to continue some of his worthy initiatives.

“What Ghanaians need to understand is upon hindsight President Mahama will make a better president having appreciated some of his own weaknesses and strengths while ruling…some challenges that obviously he could not deal with and some that today sitting back and observing and watching he’s in a better position to be able to fix many of those problems.

“So, he comes to a renewed person better prepared than he was before because he now has the benefit of hindsight…whiles in office, outside office…this is the way to go. And I think that the party should unite around him,” he said.

Haruna Iddrisu further urged the NDC to allow democratic processes to prevail in the lead up to the party’s internal contest.

He said that everyone who wishes to contest the former president for the flagbearership slot should be allowed to do so.

He however indicated that Mr. Mahama stood tall in terms of popularity.

“Nobody should close any door or any window or opportunity to any other person. We are a party of opportunity.

“The NDC gives opportunity to young people and therefore those who are desirous of running against him must be given fair and equitable opportunity and platform consistent with Article 55 of the 1992 Constitution where we must run the party to reflect democratic values and ethos.

“I believe that in terms of popularity, he is 90% ahead of those wanting to run against him and maybe they will run to share some 10% if he finally makes a declaration as I believe he has done,” Haruna Iddrisu added.

The NDC recently released a roadmap for the party’s internal elections.

Amongst many things, it has slated November this year to elect its flagbearer for the 2024 elections.

‘I Owed My Son’s School Fees, While Paying Fees For My Constituents’ – Former MP | Politics

Published

on

A former National Democratic Congress (NDC’s) Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem Constituency in the Oti Region, Mr. Daniel Ashiamah, has opened a can of worms in the life and sufferings of members of the second arm of government in the country.

According to him, as MP he was paying the fees of his constituents to the disadvantage of his immediate family.

“I was paying the medical school fees of people from my Constituency and failed to pay the secondary school fees of my son,” he narrated.

“Whilst I was paying these huge sums of money as fees for people from my Constituency, my son was being sacked for my failure to pay his fees,” he stated.

“I guess I must have forgotten about him because his fees were so so small in the schemes of fees I was paying for my constituents,” he added.

“As an MP I took the decision not to use my allocation from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) to pay fees for my children so my immediate family was suffering while my constituents were enjoying,” he said.

The former MP who came to Parliament as a result of a by-election delved into the life of an MP speaking as a panelist on the discussion segment on Ghana Yensom morning show on Accra 100.5 FM hosted by Kwame Obeng Sarkodie on Friday, May 13, 2022.

“It looks prestigious from the outside but miserable being inside because of the wanton expenditures above MP’s monthly salary,” he said.

He explained that being a member of Ghana’s Legislature is one of the most miserable professions in the country.

“It is no joy being MP adding that it is a miserable profession in Ghana’s body politics,” he stressed.

He maintained that from a meager salary MPs were paying for funeral donations, weddings among others

“I came to Parliament through a by-election and after all the work I did for the Constituency, they insisted I go for a term explaining how working as MP can be emotional and depressing.

“In this situation, if you have not planned your life what will you do,” he queries.

He cautioned the young ones about their ordinate desire to enter Parliament adding that it is not easy being in Parliament.

“If you don’t have the vision to be in Parliament, you do not have any business being there,” he warned.
