2022 World Cup Playoff: Asamoah Gyan Apologizes For Ashimeru Tweet | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has apologised for going ballistic over Majeed Ashimeru’s omission from the Black Stars squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff tie against Nigeria.

Gyan reacted angrily after learning that the Black Stars technical team headed by his former Black Stars teammate, Otto Addo had not invited Ashimeru for the crucial games despite the midfielder impressing in Belgium.

“This guy Majeed Ashimeru is the best midfielder in Ghana, after Thomas Partey, period. I have kept quiet on this but this nonsense must stop. Smh,” Gyan tweeted.

But Gyan later deleted the tweet and apologised.

“I still insist that Ashimeru deserves to be in this current Black Stars BUT am sorry for using the word “Nonsense” in my statement so I unreservedly withdraw that word, I was carried by my emotions. Go Ghana,” he wrote.

After missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, Ashimeru was expected back in the team owing to his impressive displays in the Belgian top-flight for Anderlecht.

Ashimeru has been the standout performer for Vincent Kompany’s men in the last eight games across all competitions.

In the league, Ashimeru has been involved in three goals, scoring one and assisting two while he played a key role in Anderlecht’s Belgian Cup semi-final victory over KAS Eupen.

However, the technical team of the Black Stars led by Otto Addo believe it is not enough to merit a call-up. They invited six midfielders including debutant Elisha Owusu who also plays in Belgium for Gent.

The Black Stars began preparations on Monday. Seven players reported for first training at the Accra Sports Stadium.

They will travel to Kumasi on Tuesday to continue their preparations.

The team will train on three occasions in Kumasi. Their first training is on Tuesday evening, another session on Wednesday before their final training on Thursday.

After the final training, coach Otto Addo and some players will interact with the media at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium media centre ahead of the first leg clash on Friday, March 25, 2022.

The return leg will be played four days later in Abuja at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

Cheikhou Kouyate & Ismaila Sarr Spark Fury At Their Clubs By Backing Idrissa Gueye For ‘Refusing To Play In LGBTQ Rainbow Colours’ | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Cheikhou Kouyate and Ismaila Sarr have sparked fury at their clubs Crystal Palace and Watford after appearing to back Senegal team-mate Idrissa Gueye for allegedly refusing to wear rainbow colours for PSG.

Gueye, who is a devout muslim, came under fire after he failed to feature in PSG’s 4-0 win over Montpellier, where players wore special shirts in an expression of solidarity to mark the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, on Tuesday May 17.

His manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed his absence was due to ‘personal reasons’ and not because of an injury, with French outlet RMC Sport reporting that he did not want to represent PSG in the rainbow colours.

And former Everton star Gueye has now seemingly been backed by Kouyate and Sarr, who both play with the midfielder for the Senegal national team.

Sarr posted a picture of himself standing next to Gueye on Instagram, with a fist emoji, three heart emojis and the words: ‘100 per cent’.

And Gueye’s fellow midfielder Kouyate also uploaded a photo of himself with the 32-year-old on the social media platform, calling him ‘a real man’, and adding ‘we wholeheartedly support you brother’.

Hearts Coach Devastated By Illness Situation In Camp; 19 Players Affected | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Samuel Boadu, Head Coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, says the health situation in camp has made it very difficult for him as a coach, especially at a time when they were gradually peaking.

The Accra-based giants were struck by a strange illness earlier in the week and wanted their match against Bibiani Gold Stars postponed, but the Ghana Football Association (GFA) turned it down.

Despite missing the likes of Frederick Ansah Botchway, Caleb Amankwah, Robert Addo, Richmond Ayi, Fatawu Mohammed, Abdul Aziz Nurudeen, Seidu Suraj, among others, Hearts came out victorious against Gold Stars, with Samuel Inkoom scoring the decisive goal to ensure the Phobians secured three points.

According to Coach Boadu, 19 players have been affected by illness, though he was not specific on the nature of the illness.

“Today’s game was a difficult one. We had a few problems in camp but we spoke to the guys and psyched them to come up with their best and they delivered for us to get a win.

“For now, I have not received any report from the team doctor as to the particular illness that has struck camp, but I know 19 players have been affected by the illness.

“It is very difficult and if you were in my shoes you would understand. We were in form and all of sudden this illness happened, so it was hectic for us, but we managed to put things in place to psyche the players,” he said in a post-match interview.

Despite their setback, Coach Boadu was confident that they would be able to secure all three points against Eleven Wonders in their match-day 30 encounter.

Ghana Premier League: Hearts of Oak 1-0 Bibiani GoldStars | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Hearts of Oak moved up to third place after a narrow victory over Bibiani GoldStars on Wednesday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Phobians have had a difficult few days, with several of their players hospitalized due to unknown illnesses.

Samuel Boadu raised a team, naming only five players on the bench, with Daniel Afriyie Barnieh, Abdul Aziz Nurudeen, and Isaac Mensah all absent.

They could, however, rely on goalkeeper Richard Attah, who is back in action, and experienced duo Sulley Muntari and Samuel Inkoom. One of the more experienced players decided the game in Hearts of Oak’s favour.

Inkoom scored the game-winning goal earlier in the game, giving Hearts their third win in four games and increasing their chances of finishing in the top four.

After 11 minutes, Hearts of Oak were awarded a penalty, which Inkoom calmly converted to give them the lead.

The defeat extends GoldStars’ terrible run away from home. This season, they have gone winless in 15 away games.
