Nutrition Is Key To Player Performance – Dietician Tells GWPL Officials | Football/Soccer

Published

on

An international sports consultant has advised managers of Ghana Women’s Premier League (GWPL) clubs to pay particular attention to the dietary requirements of their players as nutrition can help optimize their performance on the pitch and sustain their careers.

The consultant, Matthew Jones, who’s a dietician with London-based West Ham FC, was speaking at a workshop with club managers organized by leading global online betting and gaming brand, as part of its role as the official development partner of the GWPL.

He noted that even though some players may not appreciate the need for a good meal, they need to be given the right foods to ensure they perform at their peak.

He advised the consumption of meals with optimum calorie content because “there are problems we can have if we don’t consume enough calories.”

He said: “Based on the information I received and the sample I received of the food Ghanaian female players are receiving, there is a need to increase their calorie intake to maximize and optimise their performance. It is a problem within football in general – male and female football.”

Mr. Jones grouped foods rich in carbohydrate such pasta, rice and bread under ‘fuel’ foods while eggs, yoghurt, meat and fish are classified as ‘build’ foods that keep players in shape. He said there are also ‘boost’ foods that include fruits and vegetables while there are fluids such as water, juices and sports drinks.

According to him fuel and boost foods must be consumed in high quantities ahead of matches. But he also urged the club managers to “incorporate” all the major food groups in his classification in the meals of their players pointing out that “especially on match days, they need more fuel and boost foods.”

He also pointed out that for women footballers there is greater need to pay attention to peculiar dietary requirements.

He explained: “The iron requirements of women are considerably higher than that of [men]. Combining that with vitamin C foods enhance iron absorbtion. Towards the end of their menstrual cycle, to reduce symptoms of back pain, you can increase their intake of anti-inflammatory foods like fatty acids, flaxseeds and so forth.”

He was of the view that “there is no bad food, it’s just the context in which they are eaten.

Lead team doctor at Ashgold Sporting Club, Dr. Aniemena-George Chidi cautioned against the intake of caffeine by football players.

“The trick with caffeine is that if used right, you can have good benefits. It has side effects and since we are in a very hot environment, the problem you will face is dehydration,” he said. “[Caffeine] is a no-no for me.”
He recommended regular intake of oral rehydration salt to counter dehydration in training and on match days.

He buttressed the point that there are particular foods that must be included in the diets of female footballers.

“In Ghana, every female footballer needs iron supplements,” he said.

Chelsea Takeover: Todd Boehly’s £4.25bn Bid Approved By Government | Football/Soccer

Published

on

The government has approved the £4.25bn Todd Boehly-led consortium takeover of Chelsea.

After months of negotiations, the deal has finally been approved after the government received legal guarantees that Roman Abramovich – who has had his UK assets frozen – will not benefit from the sale.

Russian-Israeli billionaire Abramovich put Chelsea, which he purchased in 2003, up for sale on March 2, a week after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

“Late last night the UK Government reached a position where we could issue a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea Football Club,” read a government statement.

“Following the sanctioning of Roman Abramovich, the government has worked hard to ensure Chelsea Football Club has been able to continue to play football. But we have always been clear that the long-term future of the club could only be secured under a new owner.

“Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual,” continued the statement.

“We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war.

Tariq Lamptey Considering Ghana Switch After Snubbing Young Lions Call-up | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey is seriously considering switching international allegiance to Ghana after being asked to be left out of England U21’s latest squad.

The 21-year-old was expected to be selected for the Young Lions’ upcoming four Euro qualifiers against the Czech Republic, Albania, Kosovo, and Slovenia.

However, he has decided to sit out the matches while deciding whether or not to play for the Black Stars.

Lamptey, who has two England U21 caps, is of Ghanaian descent and was born in Hillingdon, west London.

Young Lions boss Lee Carsley revealed: “There’s an issue over his dual nationality. He’s had an approach. It’s something he’s considering at the minute.

“He’s asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of head space. He’s not switched, it’s not cemented or anything like that.

“But he’s had an approach (from Ghana), we have to respect that.

“We’ve made it clear how important we see him to us. I know the seniors have as well.

“It’s not something that we’ve given up on. Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him.”

Lamptey has had several “good conversations” with Carsley about the situation, and Carsley believes senior manager Gareth Southgate has also spoken with the Albion right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, James Justin, Kyle Walker-Peters, Tino Livramento, and others are among England’s options in this position.

Carsley added: “I’ve definitely got to give him a bit of space now. We’ve got a squad of players there that are desperate to play for England.

“I wouldn’t want to leave one out to bring one in that’s unsure, I don’t think that’s fair.

“But the opposite to that is Tariq is a big player for us and we see a real future for him within the pathway, so I’ll definitely be going back to him.

“He would be a big loss. We do have some really good right-backs but that doesn’t mean we should become blasé about our players.

“We see Tariq as an important player for not potentially only the senior team but the 21s as well.”

Lamptey had a decent campaign, making 30 appearances and recording two assists.

PSG ‘Will Let Neymar Leave If The Right Offer Comes In This Summer’ | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Paris Saint-Germain are willing to let Brazilian forward Neymar leave this summer if they receive a suitable offer, according to reports in France.

The Brazilian is still the most expensive player of all time after joining the French giants for £198m in 2017, but his status at the club is said to be on the wane.

And as reported by French outlet L’Equipe, his relationship with star man Kylian Mbappe – who has just signed a £650,000-a-week, three-year deal – has deteriorated to the point the club and president Nasser Al-Khelaifi are fine with letting him go.

However, European giants Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have no interest in signing the 30-year-old, and Saudi Arabia-funded Newcastle could afford him but Neymar would not want a move there.

When Neymar joined the club from Barcelona, he was one of the biggest names in the sport and Al-Khelaifi said he had ‘the best player in the world’ at the Parc des Princes.

That may still be true, but Neymar has since been eclipsed by Mbappe, who has outscored him for the last four seasons, and the 22-year-old forward’s bumper new deal cements his position as No 1 at PSG.
