President added that beginning Monday, March 28, 2022, the wearing of facemasks will no longer be mandatory.

According to him, having the majority of Ghanaians vaccinated amongst other reasons, Ghanaians will no longer be mandated to wear masks at various events and functions.

“From tomorrow, Monday, 28th March, the wearing of face masks is no longer mandatory,” he said on his 28th Covid update on Sunday, March 27, 2022.

President Akufo-Addo, however, encouraged Ghanaians to continue to maintain enhanced hand hygiene practices and avoid overcrowded gatherings.

“I encourage all of you, though, to continue to maintain enhanced hand hygiene practices, and avoid overcrowded gatherings,” he said.

He added that 13.1million vaccine doses have been administered so far as part of efforts to get rid of the coronavirus from the country.

He said a total of 29million doses of vaccines have arrived in the country to enable the target of vaccinating 20million people possible.

Akufo-Addo does not have legal backing to declassify Achimota Forest – Minority

Speaking on the floor of Parliament, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu said the government should open a public enquiry on the declassification.

Haruna Iddrisu questioned decision by the government to declassify the reserve through E.I 144 arguing the President does not have the legal backing to undertake such exercise.

“Mr. Speaker, there is the news of declassification of Achimota forest and public officers and politicians grabbing lands in the name of the republic. Without any hesitation this must be treated as an urgent matter the President should open public inquiry into the declassification of the Achimota and let the public know who bought what and how much.”

“We need to appreciate and based on the reliance on the Executive Instrument 144 the Forest Act of 1927 must remind the President and his leadership that they should go and look at the land use and special planning of land ACT 926 retooling and reclassification the mandate was not given to the President,” he disclosed.”

The Achimota Forest declassification and the subsequent expose that the former CEO of the Forestry Commission Sir John has willed portions of the forest to his relatives have dominated news headlines in the past few days.

In a recent statement, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor said the lands acquired by Sir John are void.

I, as Minister for Lands & Natural Resources, have directed the Lands and Forestry Commission to deem any ownership of lands, both in the Achimota Forest and the Sakumono Ramsar Site by the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie as void,” the Minister said in a statement issued on Tuesday, May 24.

Mr. Abu Jinapor opined that the lands will continue to be property of the state.

The socialite’s comments come at a time when the details of a will by the late Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie who was the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission has shocked Ghanaians.

The will contains a mind-blowing list of properties including some parcels of land at the Achimota Forest.

Portions of the Achimota Forest lands in his will have been allocated to his family relatives.

Page 4 of the will, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, whose office was situated at the Achimota Forest until his death, stated that “I give my land situated at the Achimota Forest in the name of Jakaypro Limited and measuring 5.541 acres to the following persons forever.”

  1. Yaw Amoateng Afriyie   –            One (1) acre
  2. Eva Akua Afriyie         –             One (1) acre
  3. Ivy Akua Afriyie            –            One (1) acre
  4. Elizabeth Asare Boateng (aka Mother)  –  One (1) acre
  5. Michael Owusu          –              1.541 acres

Page 5 of the will also states that “I give my land also situate at the Achimota Forest in the name of Fasoh Limited and measuring 0.987acres to my nephews Michael Owusu, Yaw Boadu and Kwabena Amoateng forever.”

“I jointly own a piece of land at Achimota Forest with Charles Owusu. Upon my demise, my portion of the said land should be given to Ruth Korkor Odonkor,” it added.

“I give my portion of land that jointly own at the Achimota Forest in the name of DML Limited to Elizabeth Asare Boateng who at the time of making this will is domiciled in the USA forever,” the will stated.

Sir John in the will indicated that he owned land at the Ramsar area in Sakumono in Accra.

“I give my land situated at the Ramsar area at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region and measuring 5.07 acres to my sisters Abena Saah and her children, Comfort Amoateng and her children, Abena Konadu and Juliet Akua Arko and her children on equal share basis forever,” he said.

The Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services (CERSGIS) defines a Ramsar site as “a wetlands site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar convention. It provides for national action and international cooperation regarding the conservation of wetlands, and wise sustainable use of their resources.”

According to CERSGIS, the Sakumono site “is the only wetland wholly owned by the government and is meant for protecting Sakumono, Tema and their environs against floods and pollution, for the breeding of fish for the Sakumono Lagoon, as well as recreational activities.”
