Dismissed Nigeria Coach Augustine Eguaveon Rejects Claims He Failed As Super Eagles Coach | Football/Soccer

Former Nigeria coach Augustine Eguaveon has rejected claims his time as Super Eagles gaffer was a failure after missing the World Cup.

The Super Eagles, under the leadership of Eguaveon failed to qualify for the World Cup after Ghana urged them via the away goal rule.

Reacting to the disappointment of seeing his side crumble to Ghana in Abuja, the former Nigeria captain blamed his players for not showing character.

“We lacked the character, zeal to beat Ghana when it mattered most,” he told Super Sports.

“The Ghanaians showed they wanted it more than our boys and that was why it ended that way.

“We didn’t do any of that. We did not fight or push enough for the winner and how do you do that? It is with fast-paced football, creating chances but that didn’t happen.

“In Kumasi, the Ghanaians were better but in Abuja, the Eagles were the better side but could not win.

“The games between Ghana and Nigeria are always very difficult. If we had lost in Kumasi or in Abuja, I would have regarded myself as a failure but we lost on away goal.

“We didn’t lose the game but we lost the ticket to qualify for the World Cup.”

Ghana are making and return to the global showpiece after missing the 2018 edition in Russia.

Ronaldinho Advises Salah On Liverpool Future | Football/Soccer

Published

on

The former Brazil midfielder labels the 29-year-old Pharaoh as one of the best players in the world.

Barcelona legend Ronaldinho Gaucho has answered a question on Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah’s future.

The 29-year-old Egypt international has been among the key players for the Anfield outfit in the current campaign, helping the team to clinch the League Cup and FA Cup trophies and also reach the final of the Champions League.

He was instrumental in the Premier League where Liverpool stretched Manchester City until the final day of the season when the latter were crowned champions after managing 93 points, one ahead of the Reds.

Despite his good show in the top-flight which saw him bag the Golden Boot with 23 goals from 35 appearances, Salah is yet to commit his future with Liverpool. The Egyptian’s current contract expires in the summer of 2023 and the Reds will be wary of losing Salah on a free transfer unless fresh terms can be agreed.

According to 42-year-old Ronaldinho, who played for Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan among other clubs, Salah must remain happy.

“An advice to Salah regarding his future? The most important thing is for him to be happy, football is a source of happiness and it must be no matter what club he plays for in the future,” Ronaldinho, who is in Egypt following an invitation by Egyptian Premier League outfit Eastern Company to attend their clash with Al Ahly, told reporters.

“He has to keep playing football in a way that makes him happy because there’s nothing better than playing football.”

Ronaldinho, who managed 145 appearances for Barcelona and scored 70 goals, also labelled Salah as one of the best players in the world.

“I wished I could play alongside Mohamed [Salah],” Ronaldinho continued. “He is one of the best players in the world, who I always like to watch.”

In the just-concluded season, the Egypt captain appeared in the vast majority of Liverpool matches, playing 2,762 minutes. He started in 30 of these appearances across their 38 fixtures and was used as a substitute on five occasions.

Salah was ranked first for Premier League assists this season having assisted 13 goals for his teammates.

Chelsea Takeover: Todd Boehly’s £4.25bn Bid Approved By Government | Football/Soccer

Published

on

The government has approved the £4.25bn Todd Boehly-led consortium takeover of Chelsea.

After months of negotiations, the deal has finally been approved after the government received legal guarantees that Roman Abramovich – who has had his UK assets frozen – will not benefit from the sale.

Russian-Israeli billionaire Abramovich put Chelsea, which he purchased in 2003, up for sale on March 2, a week after Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

“Late last night the UK Government reached a position where we could issue a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea Football Club,” read a government statement.

“Following the sanctioning of Roman Abramovich, the government has worked hard to ensure Chelsea Football Club has been able to continue to play football. But we have always been clear that the long-term future of the club could only be secured under a new owner.

“Following extensive work, we are now satisfied that the full proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or any other sanctioned individual,” continued the statement.

“We will now begin the process of ensuring the proceeds of the sale are used for humanitarian causes in Ukraine, supporting victims of the war.

Tariq Lamptey Considering Ghana Switch After Snubbing Young Lions Call-up | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey is seriously considering switching international allegiance to Ghana after being asked to be left out of England U21’s latest squad.

The 21-year-old was expected to be selected for the Young Lions’ upcoming four Euro qualifiers against the Czech Republic, Albania, Kosovo, and Slovenia.

However, he has decided to sit out the matches while deciding whether or not to play for the Black Stars.

Lamptey, who has two England U21 caps, is of Ghanaian descent and was born in Hillingdon, west London.

Young Lions boss Lee Carsley revealed: “There’s an issue over his dual nationality. He’s had an approach. It’s something he’s considering at the minute.

“He’s asked to be left out of the squad for a bit of head space. He’s not switched, it’s not cemented or anything like that.

“But he’s had an approach (from Ghana), we have to respect that.

“We’ve made it clear how important we see him to us. I know the seniors have as well.

“It’s not something that we’ve given up on. Tariq is fully aware of how important we see him.”

Lamptey has had several “good conversations” with Carsley about the situation, and Carsley believes senior manager Gareth Southgate has also spoken with the Albion right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, James Justin, Kyle Walker-Peters, Tino Livramento, and others are among England’s options in this position.

Carsley added: “I’ve definitely got to give him a bit of space now. We’ve got a squad of players there that are desperate to play for England.

“I wouldn’t want to leave one out to bring one in that’s unsure, I don’t think that’s fair.

“But the opposite to that is Tariq is a big player for us and we see a real future for him within the pathway, so I’ll definitely be going back to him.

“He would be a big loss. We do have some really good right-backs but that doesn’t mean we should become blasé about our players.

“We see Tariq as an important player for not potentially only the senior team but the 21s as well.”

Lamptey had a decent campaign, making 30 appearances and recording two assists.
