I Don’t Care About NPP Being Better Than NDC – Dr. Smart Sarpong Replies Bawumia | Politics

Published

on

A Senior Research Fellow of the Kumasi Technical University, Dr. Smart Sarpong, has slammed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for claiming the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has done a better job with improving Ghana’s economy than the erstwhile Mahama government.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Thursday, April 7, 2022, delivered a speech at a Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) conference held at Pentecost Convention Centre, Millennium City, Kasoa; ridiculed the previous government while highlighting some social and digital interventions made by the incumbent government to improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

Excerpts of Dr. Bawumia’s Speech

Touching on various sectors of the economy, the Veep outlined the measures by the government towards the economy.

“Virtually every government in our history has noted the need for Ghana to change the structure of the economy through diversification and by shifting from the focus on the production of raw materials to value addition. This is a key pillar of Nana Akufo-Addo’s Ghana Beyond Aid agenda,” Dr Bawumia emphasized.

“Reforms in the cocoa sector (including hand pollination have resulted in the highest ever cocoa production (1,047,385 tonnes) recorded in Ghana during the 2020/2021 cocoa season. This is very remarkable.”

“The facilitation of the growth of an Automotive Industry is on course. Volkswagen, Suzuki, Sino Truck, Peugeot, and Toyota, and recently Nissan have all established assembly plants in Ghana. KIA, Hyundai and Renault are also on course to start production in Ghana this year. Kantanka automobiles is also benefiting from the same incentives that have attracted these giants onto our shores.”

The government, he added, has started the process of building the integrated bauxite and aluminium industry, the Vice President pointed out.

“The partner for the project (Rocksure International), a wholly owned Ghanaian company, has been selected and has already started work to develop the Nyinahin-Mpassaso hills. The Minerals Resource Estimate to confirm the quantity and quality of the bauxite will be undertaken this year after which the refinery design will follow for the establishment of the aluminum refinery. Ghana has waited for this since independence and with visionary leadership, sound planning and by the Grace of God it is finally happening.”

“Changing the structure of our economy through diversification and value addition will not happen overnight. However, it remains a major pre-occupation of the government because it is our pathway to reduce import dependency, expand the economy, create jobs, increase exports, and support the value of our currency.

“The data shows that despite all the challenges of the last two years, even with COVID-19, the growth of the economy is fundamentally stronger than it was in the 2013-2016 period, and we will continue to do more”, he pledged.

Dr. Bawumia further detailed the citizens about many other initiatives undertaken by the government for the economic recovery of Ghana.

Dr. Smart Sarpong’s Response

But to Dr. Smart Sarpong, he is less concerned about the Vice President proving the NPP has done better than the Mahama (NDC) government because, to him, what is most important is how these things positively impact the economy and really resolve the hardships Ghanaians are facing.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ”Kokrokoo”, Dr. Smart Sarpong said; “I don’t really care about NPP being better than the NDC. What concerns me is for the country to be progressive . . . So, you can defend your figures but I believe a lot of people are interested in our progressive growth.”

He charged the government to ”focus on where we are now”, stressing he expected the Vice President to ”have spent more on the roadmap towards economic recovery”.

Your ‘Propaganda Masturbation’ Demystified – Baako Mocks Achimota Forest Rumormongers | Politics

Published

on

Seasoned journalist, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako has responded to speculations that the Achimota Forest has been sold.

The rumored sale of the forest reserve sparked agitations on social media with people blasting the government.

The public outcry was premised on an Executive Instrument (E.I) that circulated online reading that the land ceases to be a forest reserve.

“An Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144 gazetted on behalf of President Akufo-Addo by the Lands Minister Samuel Abdulai Jinapor indicates that effective May 1, 2022, the land on which the Forest is located shall cease to be a forest reserve.”

“The President’s action was in accordance with Section 19 of the Forest Act, 1927 (CAP. 157) which gives him the authority to declare that particular land is no longer required as a forest reserve,” portions of the E.I stated.

Addressing the issue during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show Wednesday morning, Kweku Baako described the speculations as a “propaganda masturbation”.

He noted that the E.I that surfaced on social media was done for mischief purposes explaining that those who leaked it only showed the front page and strategically ignored the inside pages that would make the public know the truth.

He also wondered why the rumormongers didn’t also showcase E.I 154 which proves the forest is not sold.

“With E.I 144, it was very simple. If it’s not for mischief purposes, there is no way you will be alarmed…The worst part is the exclusion of the E.I I54 from the narrative. That too was deliberate because when you peruse the 154, you will find out that [oh, hold on here] Achimota Forest as it is clearly is being preserved and protected”, he told host Kwami Sefa Kayi.

Assessing the speculations, he concluded that “those are distortions, misrepresentations” and lauded the Lands and Natural Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor for setting the record straight in a statement where he emphasized that “Government has and will never sell Achimota Forest” and assured the general public that “no development can take place without the express approval of the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, taking into consideration the ecological integrity of the Forest”.

“So, this matter is demystified. The propaganda masturbation was curtailed and curtailed quickly”, Kweku Baako accentuated.

Kwabena Agyepong Appeals To NPP To Pay His Wages, SSNIT Contributions (VIDEO] | Politics

Published

on

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyepong has revealed he is yet to receive salary for his service.

According to him, the work of the General Secretary is the only full-time executive position in the party and the person is entitled to monthly salary.

The NPP, he stated also pays the SSNIT contributions of the General Secretary but his case was different.

“There was only GHS89 in the party’s account when I assumed office as the General Secretary. For the first month, I used my money to pay the workers at the party headquarters and our Treasurer, Abankwah Yeboah can bear witness” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme.

Mr. Agyepong said all attempts to get the party to pay the money due him has proven futile.

“I have written several times to Chairman Blay and reminded him his tenure is about to end so he should do something because I don’t want it to get into another administration but he hasn’t responded” he bemoaned.

The former NPP General Secretary said he is ready to forgo the salary but not the SSNIT contributions.

“If they think I’m not due anything, they should pay my SSNIT contributions because all other General Secretaries have benefitted. Sir John until his death was even staying in an official apartment,” he stated.

The reason he is speaking now, Mr. Agyepong said is to let people know the unfair treatment he has been subjected to over the years despite his selfless service to the NPP.

Kwabena Agyepong was reinstated in 2021 following his suspension in 2015 after he petitioned the NPP’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
