UEFA’s Order To Partially Close Atlético Madrid’s Stadium Overturned By CAS | Football/Soccer

Published

on

European football’s governing body — has ordered the partial closure of Atlético Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano Stadium for its Champions League quarterfinal second leg against Manchester City on Wednesday as a sanction for the behavior of its supporters.

During the first leg of their quarterfinal last week, Atlético was defeated 1-0 by City thanks to a Kevin de Bruyne goal in the 70th minute while its fans were charged with “discriminatory behavior” and “throwing of objects.”

Atleti appealed the decision and the sanction was subsequently provisionally suspended by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), pending the conclusion of CAS proceedings.

According to reports from the Press Association, Atleti supporters were also filmed appearing to perform Nazi salutes during their team’s defeat.

In response, the UEFA Appeals Body sanctioned the club by ordering a sector of the stadium “to be closed, which shall at least comprehend 5,000 seats.”

Atlético Madrid must also “display a banner with the wording ‘#NoToRacism,’ with the UEFA logo on it.”

The sanction would have reduced the Wanda Metropolitano’s capacity from 68,456 to 63,456.

It is not the first time that UEFA has employed such a punishment. In 2019, it ordered Lazio’s stadium to partially close following the racist behavior of fans, while that same year Romania was forced to play a UEFA competitive match behind closed doors after its fans invaded the field of play, set off fireworks and threw objects.

On this occasion, however, CAS ruled that the sanction would not apply to the quarterfinal match against Man City.

In a statement, CAS said that “Atlético’s urgent request to stay the execution of the Challenged Decision was granted by CAS earlier today, considering the serious repercussions to local security if the partial stadium closure had to be enforced at this stage.

“The partial closure of 5000 seats of Atlético’s stadium will be automatically lifted after the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match,” the statement continued.

CAS’ decision did not mention whether Atlético will have to display a ‘#NoToRacism’ banner.

When contacted for comment, UEFA referred CNN to the CAS statement, adding: “We don’t have any further comment to make at this stage.”

Atlético will look to overturn the 1-0 deficit to City as it seeks to advance to the semifinals of the Champions League, where it would face city rival Real Madrid.

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly made a desperate attempt to keep Kylian Mbappe at the Parc des Princes by sensationally offering him control of sporting operations.

The 23-year-old’s PSG contract expires at the end of the season and is now on the verge of joining Real Madrid for nothing.

But despite there being just six weeks until he becomes a free agent, the Ligue 1 giants have made the Frenchman a staggering offer in a bid to persuade him from leaving.

According to El Chiringuito TV, PSG have offered to make Mbappe ‘the owner of the project’ from next season, where they will allow him a say in changing the manager and who his team-mates are going forward.

This offer would be on top of their reported offer of making him the highest paid player in football, with Sky Sports claiming that the French champions would be willing to give him an eye-watering deal of £4million a month – double his previous salary.

Sky Sports also claimed that Mbappe would receive a huge signing-on bonus of up to £100m if he re-signed with PSG, including concessions over image rights and any bonuses for on-pitch matters.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi reported decision to give Mbappe control of sporting operations would allow him to have his say on Mauricio Pochettino’s future, who has been linked with the exit after their Champions League exit to Real Madrid in the last-16.

Cheikhou Kouyate & Ismaila Sarr Spark Fury At Their Clubs By Backing Idrissa Gueye For ‘Refusing To Play In LGBTQ Rainbow Colours’ | Football/Soccer

Published

Cheikhou Kouyate and Ismaila Sarr have sparked fury at their clubs Crystal Palace and Watford after appearing to back Senegal team-mate Idrissa Gueye for allegedly refusing to wear rainbow colours for PSG.

Gueye, who is a devout muslim, came under fire after he failed to feature in PSG’s 4-0 win over Montpellier, where players wore special shirts in an expression of solidarity to mark the upcoming International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, on Tuesday May 17.

His manager Mauricio Pochettino confirmed his absence was due to ‘personal reasons’ and not because of an injury, with French outlet RMC Sport reporting that he did not want to represent PSG in the rainbow colours.

And former Everton star Gueye has now seemingly been backed by Kouyate and Sarr, who both play with the midfielder for the Senegal national team.

Sarr posted a picture of himself standing next to Gueye on Instagram, with a fist emoji, three heart emojis and the words: ‘100 per cent’.

And Gueye’s fellow midfielder Kouyate also uploaded a photo of himself with the 32-year-old on the social media platform, calling him ‘a real man’, and adding ‘we wholeheartedly support you brother’.

Hearts Coach Devastated By Illness Situation In Camp; 19 Players Affected | Football/Soccer

Published

on

Samuel Boadu, Head Coach of Accra Hearts of Oak, says the health situation in camp has made it very difficult for him as a coach, especially at a time when they were gradually peaking.

The Accra-based giants were struck by a strange illness earlier in the week and wanted their match against Bibiani Gold Stars postponed, but the Ghana Football Association (GFA) turned it down.

Despite missing the likes of Frederick Ansah Botchway, Caleb Amankwah, Robert Addo, Richmond Ayi, Fatawu Mohammed, Abdul Aziz Nurudeen, Seidu Suraj, among others, Hearts came out victorious against Gold Stars, with Samuel Inkoom scoring the decisive goal to ensure the Phobians secured three points.

According to Coach Boadu, 19 players have been affected by illness, though he was not specific on the nature of the illness.

“Today’s game was a difficult one. We had a few problems in camp but we spoke to the guys and psyched them to come up with their best and they delivered for us to get a win.

“For now, I have not received any report from the team doctor as to the particular illness that has struck camp, but I know 19 players have been affected by the illness.

“It is very difficult and if you were in my shoes you would understand. We were in form and all of sudden this illness happened, so it was hectic for us, but we managed to put things in place to psyche the players,” he said in a post-match interview.

Despite their setback, Coach Boadu was confident that they would be able to secure all three points against Eleven Wonders in their match-day 30 encounter.
