Arsenal defeat Crystal Palace to seal first 2022/23 Premier League, Martinelli score first goal

Published

on

The game, a 2-0 victory over Patrick Viera’s Crystal Palace which held at Selhurst Park on Friday night, was the first of 380 matches to hold this season.

The victory also meant that Mikel Arteta’s side continued their fine form from the pre-season that saw them win six of seven games.

Arsenal started the game on a bright note, coming close in as early as the 4th minute, however, Martinelli missed the opportunity, sending the rebound a few inches wide off the right post.

The next time Martinelli would have a clear opportunity, he made no mistake as he did the first time. The Brazilian jumped highest in the 20th minute to head home a headed pass from new signing Oleksandr Zinchenko.

It was Arsenal’s first of the season, as well as the Premier League’s opening goal of the 2022/23 campaign.

The rest of the half went by pretty quickly, with the next closest attempt at goal, being Odsonne Edouard’s header at Arsenal’s goal.

The second half started with lots of end-to-end display and both sides going at themselves.

First, Eberechi Eze received a precise pass inside the box and sent a promising strike towards Arsenal’s goal, however, Aaron Ramsdale guessed his intention and denied him with a fine save.

Next, and the opposing end, an ambitious effort from Bukayo Saka, came close but failed to trouble Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vincente Guaita.

Crystal Palace tried again as Wilfred Zaha shot at goal from the middle of Arsenal’s box, the attempt, however, was superbly blocked by William Saliba.

The Gunners finally got their second of the night as Marc Guehi, in an attempt to head the ball away after a cross into the penalty area, accidentally sent it into his own goal, past a helpless Guaita.

Joseph Commey cites malaria, boil under armpit as reasons for settling for silver

Published

on

Commey had defeated New Zealand’s Alex Mukaka and India’s Mohamed Hussan Uddin en route to the final, where he was scheduled to face Northern Ireland’s John Gallagher.

However, a few hours before the bout, news emerged that the Ghanaian was ill and had been declared unfit to compete.

This forced Commey to forfeit the final, therefore, settling for a silver medal while Gallagher walked away with the gold.

Explaining the events of that day, the teenager said he suffered from malaria and also had a boil under his armpit, which meant he couldn’t compete.

“I was going to the finals when I was struck with the illness. I had both malaria and a boil under my armpit,” he said, as quoted by Ghanaweb.

“After the checkup, I was told by the doctor that I couldn’t fight though I insisted on fighting. Anything could have happened if I had fought, so we give glory to God in all things. Maybe next time I might win gold or maybe the Olympics games I might win gold.”

Meanwhile, Ghana won five medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham which ended on Monday, August 8, 2022.

Boxing delivered Ghana’s first three medals at the Games, with Abraham Mensah and Commey winning silver medals, while Abdul Wahid Omar won bronze.

In athletics, Joseph Paul Amoah scooped bronze after impressively finishing third in the final of the 200m event with a time of 20.49s.

This takes the country’s total haul at the Commonwealth Games to 62 medals since the inception of the Games in 1954.

on

The decision to buy gold output of mining firms in cedis was reached during a meeting on Tuesday, August 9, between the Economic Management Team headed by Dr Bawumia, the Bank of Ghana, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, PMMC and the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

Further details indicate that the Central Bank will commence the purchase of gold in cedis starting next month, September 1, 2022.

The move, forms part of government’s roadmap for the implementation of the Central Bank’s Gold Purchase Programme across the industry.

The gold purchase programme, when effectively implemented, will represent a significant and sustainable addition to Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves over time and strengthen the country’s balance of payments.

The Bank of Ghana’s domestic gold purchasing programme was launched in June 2021 with the primary objective of increasing its gold reserves.

Subsequently, the Bank of Ghana initiated discussions with the Ghana Chamber of Mines (GCM) about its intention to purchase refined gold from mining companies in the country.

While mining companies in Ghana were prepared to support the programme, there was a need to ensure that the initiative met the governance, risk, compliance, and supply chain requirements of their various companies.

Under the programme, the central bank requires an estimated amount of ~10koz of gold annually from members of the Chamber of Mines over the next four to five years.
